Jagged Little Alanis – I’m back in a band!

Yep – after an actual audition a few weeks back, I’ve joined a real, honest to goodness band. Jagged Little Alanis, and Alanis Morissette tribute band!

I was initially interested party because the Jam night schedule was starting to grate a little – some of the local jams in Reading have become very successful, which ironically meant learning a lot of material in short timescales, only to play it once. Great fun for the couple of years I was really into it, and you get to see people, but I really wanted to get some rest from that for a bit and pick and choose jams to attend, as a punter.

The Alanis gig got suggested to me by a couple of people, and ironically I went for it after jamming with their keyboard player, who’s solid and loves archiving patches for all the stuff he does (a busy man). We did a jam night and wound up playing Cars by Gary Numan, and it sounded epic, so I decided to get in there.

Audition tracks included “You Oughta Know” (YouTube link) and I remembered trying to learn in note for note sometime in my early 30s (more than 20 years ago). I decided it was a great idea to really deep dive into the track and learn it properly, note for note, so I took a week and really broke it down. It’s Flea, after all!

The audition went really well. Everybody is happy, engaged and enjoying themselves, and the vocalist has serious vocal chops – her take on Alanis is brilliant, with the kind of vocal cues and tics Alanis uses done so well you could close your eyes and think it’s her.

Now it’s 4 gigs later, including an excellent gig in Aylesbury a couple of weekends ago, which sold really well. Video and pictures exist! I’ll post some of those on Instagram and in a separate post here.
